Product Overview

The EPP1018-0001 (EPP10180001) is a compact, high-density digital input module designed for decentralized machine-mount applications. Leveraging EtherCAT P technology, this unit integrates high-speed communication and power supply (Us and Up) into a single, standardized M8 P-coded cable. In advanced manufacturing sectors such as high-speed sorting, robotic pick-and-place, and automotive assembly, the EPP1018-0001 allows for 8 digital inputs to be positioned directly at the sensor source. Its ultra-fast 10 µs input filter makes it ideal for capturing high-frequency signals and rapid trigger events. Encapsulated in a robust PA6 polyamide housing with an IP67 rating, this module eliminates the need for protective control cabinets, reducing total system weight and simplifying field wiring in space-constrained environments.

Technical Configuration

The EPP1018-0001 provides 8 digital inputs that comply with EN 61131-2 Type 1/3 specifications, ensuring compatibility with a vast range of industrial proximity sensors and switches. The device utilizes M8 A-coded 3-pin connectors for sensor interfacing, providing a standardized and vibration-proof connection point. Sensor power is drawn directly from the control voltage (Us) provided by the EtherCAT P line, with an integrated 0.5 A short-circuit-proof supply. The dual M8 P-coded bus interfaces allow for efficient daisy-chaining of EtherCAT P devices, facilitating a streamlined "One Cable Automation" topology that minimizes cable management complexity on the machine frame.

Technical FAQs

Does the 10 µs filter time require special software configuration?

The 10 µs filter is a fixed hardware-level characteristic of the EPP1018-0001. It is designed to capture very fast pulses that standard 3.0 ms filter terminals might miss. Ensure your TwinCAT cycle time is fast enough to process the high-frequency data provided by this module.

What is the benefit of the PA6 (Polyamide) material for the housing?

PA6 is a high-performance thermoplastic known for its excellent mechanical strength, rigidity, and resistance to oils, greases, and many chemicals. This makes the EPP1018-0001 highly durable in industrial wash-down areas or environments where it may be exposed to cutting fluids.

How do I calculate if the sensor supply is sufficient for 8 sensors?

The total sensor supply across all 8 channels is 0.5 A (500 mA). If each of your sensors consumes 50 mA, the total draw is 400 mA, which is within the safe operating limit. If using high-power sensors, verify the cumulative draw to prevent the short-circuit protection from tripping.

Engineering & Installation Guide

  • Mounting and Grounding: The EPP1018-0001 features two 3.5 mm fixing holes for M3 screws. While the housing is non-conductive PA6, ensuring a proper connection of the shielded M8 cables is vital. The shielding of the EtherCAT P cables must be intact and properly seated in the screw-type M8 sockets to maintain high EMC immunity.

  • M8 Connector Sealing: To ensure IP67 integrity, all unused M8 sockets must be sealed with protective caps. When connecting sensors, tighten the M8 A-coded plugs to 0.4 Nm. Over-tightening can damage the internal threads, while under-tightening can lead to moisture ingress.

  • EtherCAT P Power Budgeting: When designing a segment, verify the total current draw from the Us (system and sensor supply). The EPP1018-0001 typically draws 100 mA for itself plus the connected sensor load. Ensure the total current on the P-coded trunk does not exceed the 3 A limit of the standard M8 P-coded cable.
