Description

The GE IS420ESWBH3A is an industrial, unmanaged Ethernet 10/100 switch developed for real-time control solutions within the Mark VIe and Mark VIeS Safety control systems. Operating primarily as an IONet switch, this device facilitates deterministic, high-speed communication infrastructure required by critical turbine control and industrial automation networks. To achieve maximum signal integrity and uptime, the module incorporates redundant power supply inputs utilizing a Diode-OR'd internal architecture. Housed in a compact, rugged form factor designed for heavy industrial environments, it delivers localized high-density copper ports without the complexity of unneeded fiber optics, ensuring continuous system compatibility across the entire Mark VIe ecosystem.

Features

  • Full compliance with IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, and 802.3x networking standards for seamless integration.
  • Equipped with 16 RJ-45 copper ports supporting 10/100 Base-TX auto-negotiation.
  • Features HP-MDIX auto-sensing across all ports to eliminate the need for specialized crossover cables.
  • Provides comprehensive diagnostic LEDs per port indicating Link Presence, Activity, Duplex, and Speed via dual-color signals.
  • Integrates a dedicated power status LED indicating active voltage across the internal power rails.
  • Internal switch fabric contains a minimum 256 KB buffer with a 4 K Media Access Control (MAC) address table capacity.
  • Designed with a non-interfering safety rating suitable for deployment alongside safety-instrumented systems.

Applications

  • Real-time IONet control ring and star topologies in Mark VIe gas and steam turbine control systems.
  • High-density distribution infrastructure within Mark VIeS functional safety control enclosures.
  • Power generation balance-of-plant (BOP) unmanaged Ethernet networking layers.
  • Petrochemical and process automation systems requiring G3 conformal coating protection against harsh airborne contaminants.

Installation Guidelines

CRITICAL WARNING:

Disconnect all electrical power sources from the enclosure prior to mounting, wiring, or servicing this equipment. Failure to isolate power can result in transient voltage spikes, equipment degradation, or severe personal injury. Ensure all redundant power inputs (TB1 and TB2) are entirely de-energized and confirm that any residual capacitive charge has safely bled off before manipulating terminal blocks.

1
Select the appropriate GE qualified DIN-rail mounting clip based on enclosure orientation. Use clip part 259B2451BVP1 if mounting the long edge parallel to the rail, or part 259B2451BVP4 if mounting the long edge perpendicular to the rail. Secure the clip to the switch body using the included mounting screws.
2
Snap the assembly onto a grounded, standard 35 mm DIN rail. Ensure the rail is bonded directly to the low-impedance master enclosure ground bus to minimize radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI).
3
Wire independent 24V or 28V DC power sources into the two provided Phoenix Contact terminal block plugs. Tighten the securing screws down into TB1 and TB2 to achieve mechanical hold-down against high vibration.
4
Insert standard Category 5e UTP cables into the 8P8C RJ-45 ports. Ensure the locking tabs click firmly into place. Maintain clean separate routing paths for network data cables away from high-voltage or high-current AC/DC power runs.

How many fiber-optic ports are integrated on this hardware model?

This hardware variant contains zero fiber ports. It features 16 copper RJ-45 10/100Base-TX network ports exclusively.

What happens if one of the dual DC power supply feeds drops voltage?

The switch integrates an internal Diode-OR'd redundant power subsystem across the inputs. If one power source drops voltage, the alternate source instantly sustains full device operation without interrupting active network traffic.

Is this network switch considered a managed or unmanaged device?

It is a specialized unmanaged Ethernet switch engineered to provide zero-configuration, low-latency, real-time deterministic data distribution across IONet topologies.

What ambient operational temperatures can this device tolerate?

The switch is rated for reliable continuous operation across a broad temperature spectrum from -40 degC up to +70 degC.
