Description

The Woodward 1751-6058 is a 4 Channel MPU Transformer designed to provide galvanically isolated signal conditioning and voltage limiting for magnetic pickup (MPU) speed sensors. In turbine control and speed condition monitoring systems, magnetic pickup sensors generate alternating current (AC) voltage signals whose amplitude increases proportionally with speed. The 1751-6058 isolation transformer limits high peak voltages to protect downstream speed monitoring hardware, such as the NI 9221 analog input module in the Woodward Turbine Protection Monitoring (TPM) system, against electrical overvoltage while maintaining signal integrity across speed sensing channels.

Featuring a 1:1 transformation ratio, the Woodward 1751-6058 4 channel MPU transformer isolates up to four independent magnetic pickup probe signals. By breaking ground loops and suppressing common-mode noise, the device ensures precise zero-crossing detection and accurate speed measurement for gas generators, power turbines, and rotating industrial machinery operating under harsh electrical environments.

Features

  • Quad-channel architecture supporting up to four independent magnetic pickup (MPU) speed probes
  • 1:1 signal transformation ratio for accurate frequency pass-through without voltage scaling
  • Galvanic isolation between speed sensor field wiring and control monitoring hardware
  • Prevents input overvoltage damage to speed processing units during high-RPM prime mover operation
  • Mitigates electrical noise, ground potential differences, and signal interference on speed lines
  • Engineered for integration with Woodward Turbine Protection Monitoring (TPM) hardware and NI 9221 modules

Applications

  • Gas generator speed probe signal isolation
  • Power turbine overspeed protection monitoring systems
  • Steam turbine and industrial gas turbine speed sensing interfaces
  • High-noise industrial environments requiring ground loop elimination for MPU signals

Installation Guidelines

  • Mounting & Placement: Install the transformer module securely inside a shielded industrial enclosure in close proximity to the speed monitoring logic or module cabinet.
  • Shielding & Grounding: Connect shielded twisted-pair cables from magnetic pickup probes to the primary terminals. Ensure cable shields are single-point grounded to the main chassis ground terminal to mitigate EMI/RFI noise.
  • Wiring Requirements: Route high-voltage or power distribution wiring away from MPU signal conductors to avoid induced signal distortion.
  • Signal Verification: Confirm that the output signal amplitude matches the input voltage limits required by the processing module across the full operating RPM range of the prime mover.
