Description

The FEN-31 is an option module providing a High-Threshold Logic (HTL) incremental encoder interface for industrial motor drives including the ACS880 series. This communication interface card enables precise speed and position feedback loop integration by accepting differential or single-ended HTL encoder signals. It supports encoder input channels A, B, and Z at signal frequencies up to 300 kHz. In addition to processing primary tracking data, the FEN-31 provides a TTL encoder emulation output compliant with RS-422/485 standards, two high-speed digital position latch inputs for event capture, and a non-isolated connection terminal designed for direct motor temperature diagnostics via PTC, Pt1000, or KTY-84 sensors. This integration ensures deterministic synchronization and steady motion metrics across demanding automation process lines.

Features

  • Interfaces high-voltage HTL incremental feedback sensors directly with drive control boards.
  • Implements dynamic line fault monitoring to actively detect open-circuit wire errors on signal channels.
  • Supports configurable internal pull-up and pull-down options using onboard manual DIP switches.
  • Features an RS-422 standard TTL emulation output port for mirroring encoder signals to secondary control units.
  • Incorporates dual position latch inputs for sub-millisecond hardware-level event registration.

Applications

  • Closed-loop speed regulation loops for ACS880 industrial multi-drive installations.
  • High-precision position sensing in metal processing, crane hoisting systems, and automated paper mills.
  • Real-time cut-to-length material monitoring utilizing built-in fast position latches.
  • Winding temperature tracking paired with synchronized motor speed feedback in high-load manufacturing cells.

Installation Guidelines

  • Voltage Jumper Setting: Two distinct auxiliary voltages (+15 V DC and +24 V DC) are present on terminal block X81. You must select the right voltage jumper configuration matching your encoder requirements before mounting; supplying an incorrect voltage level can destroy or permanently damage the feedback hardware.
  • Mechanical Slot Insertion: Ensure the drive input power is fully disconnected before slotting the expansion module. Disengage the module locking latch, slide the board into its target option slot inside the drive chassis, verify the plastic clips lock securely, and secure the integrated ground screw to complete the EMC grounding path.
  • Cabling and Shield Termination: Use high-quality twisted-pair shielded cable for all interface wiring. Ensure encoder-side shield terminations follow system manuals; do not bridge shields at both physical ends if the motor housing is already grounded to prevent circulating earth ground loops.
  • Signal Separation Path: Keep encoder and latch wiring segregated from main AC output phase cables, high-power switching paths, and dynamic power conductors to protect feedback streams against electro-magnetic induction noise (EMI).
  • Temperature Sensor Isolation: Direct connection of temperature sensors (PTC/Pt1000/KTY-84) to port X81 is permitted only if the thermal element has reinforced double insulation properties relative to the motor live windings.

ABB FEN-31 Option Modules HTL Encoder Interface

How should the internal DIP switches be set for open collector encoders?

Open the option module housing to access the internal DIP switches situated between terminal blocks X81 and X82. Turn switches 1, 2, and 3 ON to connect the signal pathways, and match switch 4 to your circuit configuration to secure the internal 1.55 kilohm pull-up path.

What is the maximum signal frequency processed by the input channels?

The HTL differential and single-ended input circuits are designed to safely process signal frequencies up to a maximum limit of 300 kHz.

Can an external power supply be used to power the encoder through this card?

Yes. An external power supply rated between 10 and 24 V DC can be tied directly into pins 4 and 5 of connector X81, provided that the onboard voltage selection link jumper is completely removed beforehand.
