The Allen-Bradley 1761-NET-AIC is a high-performance AIC+ advanced interface converter engineered to provide a reliable, isolated electronic communication link between various networked automation components. Operating as an intelligent protocol and physical layer adapter, the module features built-in electrical isolation to establish point-to-point or multidrop routing across diverse serial networks without risking ground loop faults. By utilizing dual RS-232 pathways combined with a dedicated RS-485 port interface, this device smoothly links controllers, personal computer configurations, operator terminals, and modems across demanding shop floor networks.

Features

  • Triple Port Interface: Integrated architecture offering one RS-485 Phoenix plug connection, an 8-pin mini-DIN RS-232 port, and a conventional 9-pin DB-9 DTE RS-232 communication port.
  • Comprehensive Electrical Isolation: Delivers 500V DC internal electrical isolation boundary limits between all communication ports and the active power supply terminals.
  • Flexible Operational Clocking: Built-in communication-rate selector switch supports distinct transmission steps including 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 14400, and 19200 bps, alongside an automated AUTO position mode.
  • Adaptable Power Sourcing: Built-in DC power-source selector switch allows the module to extract active power directly from a connected MicroLogix controller or use external 24V DC auxiliary block terminals.
  • Industrial Networking Range: Extends a standard DH-485, DF1, or user network multidrop segment up to 1219 m (4000 ft) with a total allowance of up to 32 nodes per network link.

Applications

  • Multidrop DH-485 or DF1 industrial network extensions connecting modular SLC 500 and compact MicroLogix controller nodes.
  • Isolation interfaces between local supervisory computer workstations (PC serial COM ports) and high-voltage factory networks.
  • Distributed multi-node configurations linking remote PanelView operator graphic terminals to distributed control backplanes.

Connections and Interfaces

Interface Port Description / Assignment
RS-485 Port (Phoenix Plug) Terminal 1: Chassis Ground | Terminal 2: Shield | Terminal 3: Common | Terminal 4: B | Terminal 5: A | Terminal 6: Termination
RS-232 Port (8-pin mini-DIN) Primary communication connection designed to interface with MicroLogix controllers; capable of drawing internal operational power.
RS-232 Port (DB-9, DTE) Standard 9-pin serial layout matching personal computer COM channels, PanelView graphic units, modems, or alternative DTE lines.
External Power Terminals Screw block connection points for dedicated auxiliary external 24V DC supply lines and structural ground wire runs.

Installation Guidelines

ATTENTION: EXPLOSION HAZARD. Substitution of components may impair suitability for Class I, Division 2 environments. Do not replace components or disconnect equipment unless power has been switched off or the installation area is known to be nonhazardous. Do not operate switches or mating cables while the circuit is live.
1

Enclosure Selection: Install the interface converter inside a protective industrial enclosure. All interconnecting data cables must remain housed within the enclosure or be shielded using rigid electrical conduit.

2

DIN Rail Assembly: Snap the converter housing directly onto a standardized top-hat style DIN rail channel, or mount it securely to a backpanel plane using the integrated mounting feet holes.

3

Power Switch Selection: Position the DC power-source selector switch before activating the lines. Set the switch to EXTERNAL when using independent 24V DC terminal feeds, or set it to CABLE if deriving internal power directly from a MicroLogix 8-pin mini-DIN cable.

4

RS-485 Cable Termination: For end-of-line nodes on a daisy-chained RS-485 trunk line using Belden #3106A or #9842 cable, connect a short wire jumper between Terminal 1 (Chassis Ground) and Terminal 2 (Shield) on one end to provide a single, secure earth path.

5

Baud Rate Optimization: Keep the communication-rate selector switch set to the AUTO position for standard installations. In environments with severe electromagnetic noise or interference, switch it to manual and set it to match the exact fixed baud rate of the network.

Compliance and Certifications

  • UL 1604 Standard
  • C-UL C22.2 No. 213
  • Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D Hazardous Locations
  • CE Compliant (Council Directive 89/336/EEC EMC / Council Directive 73/23/EEC Low Voltage)

When is an external 24V DC power supply required for this converter?

An external power supply is mandatory in Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations, or in configurations where the 8-pin mini-DIN port is not connected directly to a power-providing MicroLogix controller.

Can the 1761-HHP-B30 Hand-Held Programmer be used with this module?

No. The 1761-HHP-B30 Hand-Held Programmer cannot be connected to or used through the advanced interface converter.

What is the purpose of the internal 500V DC isolation boundary?

The 500V DC isolation safe zone protects connected components from electrical noise, voltage transients, and dangerous ground loops across conflicting communication networks and power line systems.
