The KS9520 is a specialized potential feed terminal designed to integrate AS-Interface (AS-i) networks into a Beckhoff Bus Terminal block. Its primary function is to feed the AS-Interface voltage (up to 35 V DC) into the power contacts of subsequent terminals while providing essential signal filtering. Unlike standard power feed terminals, the KS9520 is equipped with an integrated filter that ensures the specific data-on-power modulation of the AS-i bus remains stable and free from interference generated by adjacent industrial electronics. Featuring pluggable wiring (KS series), this terminal allows for rapid installation and maintenance, as the entire wiring level can be removed without disconnecting individual conductors.

The KS9520 acts as a passive hardware bridge for AS-i power distribution:

  • Integrated Filtering: Designed specifically for AS-Interface requirements, the filter prevents high-frequency noise from the local terminal bus from corrupting the AS-i communication signal.

  • Pluggable Wiring Level: As a "KS" series terminal, it features a removable front connector. This is ideal for high-availability systems where a terminal body may need replacement without rewiring the field cables.

  • No Configuration Required: The device is transparent to the network. It requires no AS-i address and does not appear in the software configuration of the bus coupler, acting strictly as a physical power interface.

Why is a specialized filter terminal like the KS9520 necessary for AS-i?

The AS-Interface protocol uses a unique method where data is modulated directly onto the DC power lines. Standard industrial power supplies or unfiltered feed terminals can introduce electrical noise that "blurs" these data pulses. The KS9520 ensures that the power fed to the AS-i modules is clean enough to maintain reliable communication.

What is the difference between the KL9520 and the KS9520?

The "KL" version uses permanent Spring Force wiring, whereas the KS9520 features a pluggable wiring level. Functionally they are identical, but the KS version is preferred in applications where "Mean Time To Repair" (MTTR) is a critical metric, as it allows for faster hardware swaps.

Does this terminal provide electrical isolation?

No. There is no electrical isolation between the input and output. It is a direct potential feed intended to continue the AS-i power bus across a segment of terminals.


Engineering & Installation Guide

  • Wiring Standards: Use specialized AS-i yellow flat cable or appropriate round cable with a cross-section of 0.08…1.5 mm². Ensure the stripping length is exactly 9…10 mm to guarantee a vibration-resistant connection in the spring-actuated terminals.

  • Placement in the Terminal Bus: The KS9520 should be placed at the start of a new AS-i segment within the Bus Terminal block. It will feed the potential to the internal power contacts (the gold leaf springs on the side of the terminals) for all following terminals to the right.

  • Power Contact Capacity: While the AS-i feed is limited to 2 A, the power contacts themselves can handle up to 10 A. Always ensure your AS-i power supply is correctly fused and rated for the total load of all connected sensors and actuators in that segment.
