Designed for direct connection of thermocouples located in hazardous areas classified Zone 0/20, the Beckhoff ELX3314 processes four high-precision differential analog signals within an intrinsically safe Ex i EtherCAT architecture. This module enables direct temperature measurement from field sensors in explosive atmospheres without requiring additional external safety barriers, optimizing cabinet space and system integration.

Key Features

  • Intrinsically Safe (Ex i) Interfaces: Certified for direct connection to sensors located in Zone 0/20, Zone 1/21, and Zone 2/22 hazardous areas.
  • Multi-Thermocouple Support: Compatible with thermocouple types K, J, L, E, T, N, U, B, R, S, and C (Type K set as default).
  • High-Resolution Digitization: 16-bit analog-to-digital conversion delivering 0.1 degC per digit resolution.
  • Onboard Signal Processing: Integrated limit value monitoring, digital filtering, and sensor characteristic curve linearization.
  • Compact Form Factor: 12 mm housing width with integrated status LEDs for channel diagnostics and run/error states.

Industrial Applications

  • Chemical & Petrochemical Processing: Temperature monitoring of reactors, distillation columns, and storage vessels in hazardous zones.
  • Oil & Gas Refining: Thermal profiling of pipelines, extraction units, and processing facilities.
  • Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: High-precision temperature control in sterile, explosive solvent environments.
  • Combustion & Furnace Control: Direct exhaust gas and burner temperature measurement in hazardous industrial environments.

Empirical Engineering Insights

Alternative Models & Compatibility

The ELX3314 requires the ELX9560 power supply terminal to feed the power contacts with the necessary intrinsically safe isolation. It cannot be mixed directly with standard non-Ex EL series terminals without the appropriate ELX9560 isolation barrier separating the power rails on the DIN rail assembly.

Application Pitfalls & Engineering Notes

When designing the physical layout, ensure the total current consumption on the E-bus (70 mA) and power contacts (10 mA) does not exceed the maximum output current of the upstream ELX9560 power supply terminal. Maintain strict physical separation between intrinsically safe (Ex i) field wiring and non-intrinsically safe wiring in the control cabinet.

Commissioning & Wiring Tips

Use shielded thermocouple extension wire and ground the shield at the entry point of the control cabinet. Configure the specific thermocouple type and conversion time (10 to 5000 ms) within TwinCAT System Manager to optimize noise rejection (default conversion time is 310 ms).

Installation Guidelines

CRITICAL WARNING: HAZARDOUS AREA SAFETY

De-energize the entire system before installing, removing, or wiring any ELX series terminal. Ensure compliance with local explosion protection regulations (EN 60079-14) and verify that the Ex i parameters of the connected thermocouple match the safety values of the ELX3314.

1

Mount the ELX9560 power supply terminal onto the 35 mm DIN rail (conforming to EN 60715) to establish the Ex i power segment.

2

Slide the ELX3314 terminal onto the DIN rail to the right of the power supply, ensuring the double slot and key connection locks securely with the adjacent module.

3

Strip the thermocouple field wires to 8–9 mm. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the spring release slot, insert the wire, and release to secure the connection.

4

Connect the EtherCAT network, apply 24 V DC power to the ELX9560, and verify that the run LED on the ELX3314 turns green.
