Description

The IS220YDOAS1A is a safety-certified discrete output module developed by General Electric for the Mark VIeS functional safety control system series. Functioning as a high-integrity Safety Discrete Output I/O Pack, the device establishes an intelligent electrical interface between redundant Ethernet control networks and discrete output terminal boards. It receives digital commands from the safety controller over dual communication channels and transforms them into physical control states to drive external field components such as solenoids, contactors, and interlock relays. Engineered for critical infrastructure and turbine protection loops, the module supports single, dual, or Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) structural layouts to ensure maximum fault tolerance and system availability in high-risk operational environments.

Features

  • Equipped with a high-performance processor board and a dedicated data acquisition board assembly
  • Supports multi-channel discrete output control with internal hardware voting for TMR safety architectures
  • Collects real-time diagnostic feedback from field terminal boards including fuse condition and relay coil monitoring
  • Features dual redundant 10/100 Mbps RJ45 Ethernet ports for reliable network infrastructure cross-strapping
  • Built-in power circuit soft-start control to safely limit inrush current during live hot-swap insertions
  • Integrates explicit on-board visual LED indicators for real-time status tracking and hardware diagnostics

Applications

  • Emergency Trip Systems (ETS) and overspeed protection loops for utility gas and steam turbines
  • Emergency Shutdown (ESD) management systems within hazardous or high-pressure chemical processes
  • Fire and Gas (F&G) logic system execution and safety interlock orchestration
  • Heavy industrial process automation requiring safety-instrumented systems (SIS) certified infrastructure

Installation Guidelines

Hardware Integration & Alignment

Secure the corresponding discrete output terminal board firmly to the cabinet subpanel or DIN rail mounting grid. Align the rear DC-37 pin connector of the module with the receptor plug on the terminal board base. Press the module down vertically until the contact seating is secure, and tighten the mechanical retaining fasteners onto the mounting plate to prevent high-frequency mechanical loosening.

Ethernet Network Routing

Connect individual twisted-pair industrial Ethernet lines to the ENET1 and ENET2 RJ45 communication ports. To establish a fault-resilient dual-bus topology, route the cables through separate wireways within the panel enclosure to reduce cross-coupling and eliminate localized points of failure across independent network layers.

Hot-Swap Component Exchange

The module includes built-in inrush-limiting components on its internal power rails, allowing maintenance technicians to disconnect or insert the module while the system terminal boards are energized. When replacing a device under live conditions, disconnect the redundant network communication links and the side-mounted power supply input block prior to mechanical disengagement from the board.

Technical Datasheet

General Electric IS220YDOAS1A Mark VIeS Safety Discrete Output I/O Pack

What is the primary role of this discrete output pack within the system?

The module bridges the software logic layer of the controller and physical safety devices, converting Ethernet commands into voted physical discrete commands to drive terminal board loads.

What are the input power voltage boundaries for this specific module?

The module operates safely within a narrow DC input voltage window ranging from a minimum of 27.4 V dc up to a maximum of 28.6 V dc, with a nominal target of 28.0 V dc.

Does the unit support online maintenance or hot-swapping under power?

Yes. Internal soft-start circuitry controls inrush current peaks during initialization, permitting hot-swapping or replacing modules without interrupting operational power on the terminal board.
