Description

Integrating additional I/O capacity into MELSEC FX series control systems is simplified with the Mitsubishi Electric FX2N-48ER-DS extension unit. Designed to scale the capabilities of FX2N and compatible base PLC units, this module provides 48 local digital I/O points in a single, robust housing. Equipped with its own built-in DC power supply, the FX2N-48ER-DS relieves the backplane power load of the main controller, allowing for expanded decentralized configurations and robust field wiring schemes.

The unit features 24 digital inputs designed for 24V DC sink or source signals, alongside 24 relay outputs capable of switching both AC and DC field loads. Photocoupler isolation shields internal logic circuits from field electrical noise, securing high system stability in harsh industrial electromagnetic environments.

Features

  • High-Density Expansion: Adds 24 digital inputs and 24 digital outputs to compatible base PLCs.
  • Self-Powered: Built-in 24V DC power supply unit (PSU) ensures independent power handling for field devices and internal logic.
  • Flexible Input Configuration: Inputs can be wired as either sink or source (24V DC) to match various sensor types.
  • Relay Contacts: 24 electromagnetic relay outputs provide versatile voltage switching capability (up to 250V AC or 30V DC).
  • Removable Terminal Blocks: Simplifies initial wiring installation and allows rapid module replacement during maintenance cycles.
  • Status Diagnostics: Dedicated LED indicators for power status and individual I/O channel activity.

Applications

  • Packaging machinery and product conveying systems.
  • Water treatment control panels and pump stations.
  • HVAC systems and localized building automation panels.
  • Automated assembly and manufacturing cells.

Connections and Interfaces

Terminal Group Function / Description
Power Supply Terminals Connection points for external 24V DC primary power input and protective earth ground.
Input Terminals (X) Octal-numbered terminals (X0-X27) for 24V DC input field signals, including S/S terminal for sink/source routing.
Output Terminals (Y) Octal-numbered terminals (Y0-Y27) for relay load circuits, grouped around isolated common (COM) points.

Installation Guidelines

  • Power Isolation: Always isolate all power sources before attempting mounting, wiring, or physical diagnostic checks.
  • Orientation: Mount the unit horizontally on a flat vertical surface to facilitate natural convective cooling. Avoid mounting in horizontal orientations that trap heat.
  • Spacing: Ensure a minimum clearance of 50mm between the extension unit and adjacent control devices or trunking.
  • Grounding: Connect the functional ground terminal (FG) securely to a low-impedance industrial ground bus using minimum 2mm squared copper wiring.
  • Wiring Integrity: Use appropriate crimp terminals for M3 screws. Adhere to a tightening torque of 0.5 to 0.8 Nm to prevent connection damage.

Does the FX2N-48ER-DS require power from the main PLC unit?

No. The FX2N-48ER-DS features its own built-in 24V DC power supply, meaning it powers its own internal logic and input circuits independently from the main PLC processor.

Can the digital inputs on this unit be used with both NPN and PNP sensors?

Yes. The inputs can be configured for either sink (NPN) or source (PNP) wiring depending on how the S/S terminal is connected.

What is the maximum current rating for the relay outputs?

Each individual relay output point is rated for a maximum of 2A. However, ensure that the total load connected to any shared common (COM) terminal does not exceed 8A.

Is it possible to mount this extension unit directly to a control panel without a DIN rail?

Yes. The FX2N-48ER-DS can be mounted directly onto a panel surface using standard mounting screws, or installed on a standard 35mm DIN rail.
