Description

Designed to interface directly with industrial actuators and variable frequency drives, the Mitsubishi Electric Q68DAVN converts 16-bit digital commands into precise voltage control signals. This high-density analog output module integrates seamlessly into the MELSEC Q Series PLC backplane, occupying 16 intelligent I/O points. It features 8 voltage output channels capable of driving loads ranging from 1k ohm to 1M ohm, offering high flexibility for system integration. Industrial operators can select between standard resolution and high-resolution configurations to match specific process requirements, ensuring smooth dynamic control across demanding plant-floor environments.

Key Features

  • High-Channel Density: Houses 8 independent analog voltage output channels within a single slot profile to conserve backplane space.
  • Dual-Resolution Modes: Supports standard resolution (-4096 to 4095) and high-resolution digital inputs (-16384 to 16383) for fine-grained process tuning.
  • Robust System Isolation: Utilizes photocoupler isolation between input/output terminals and the main PLC backplane, paired with transformer isolation for external power supplies.
  • Integrated Output Protection: Built-in short-circuit protection prevents hardware damage from field wiring faults or load failures.
  • Long-Term Configuration Memory: Features an onboard EEPROM rated for up to 100,000 write operations, preserving calibration and parameter settings without battery backup.

Applications

  • Proportional valve control in hydraulic and pneumatic operations.
  • Speed setpoint transmission to variable frequency drives (VFDs) and servo controllers.
  • Multi-axis actuator positioning systems in packaging and automotive assembly lines.
  • Process control loop integration within water treatment and chemical dosing facilities.

Empirical Engineering Insights

Alternative Models & Compatibility

The Q68DAVN acts as the direct upgrade path for the older legacy Q68DAV module. When transitioning from the legacy non-N model, the physical dimensions and core program block parameters remain backward compatible. However, verify that your GX Works2 or GX Works3 programming software is updated with the correct Intelligent Function Module profile to ensure the N-variant configuration parameters align correctly with your PLC CPU.

Application Pitfalls & Engineering Notes

A key risk with the Q68DAVN is that individual output channels are not isolated from one another. If you drive multiple field devices from different power zones, ground loops will occur and cause output signal drifting or channel failure. If channel-to-channel isolation is mandatory for your field wiring architecture, external signal conditioning and isolators must be installed between this module's terminal block and the field components.

Commissioning & Wiring Tips

Always use high-quality twisted shielded pair (STP) cable for all analog voltage output lines, keeping runs as short as possible to prevent electromagnetic interference. Terminate the shield at the FG terminal of the module. Note that the non-FG terminals do not accept sleeved crimp terminals; you must use bare-shank R1.25-3 ring or fork terminals to prevent the protective terminal block cover from failing to latch properly.

Installation Guidelines

CRITICAL SYSTEM WARNING

Shut off all external power supplies to the PLC backplane and the auxiliary 24 VDC supply before inserting or removing the Q68DAVN module. Failure to de-energize the entire system before physical manipulation can result in permanent damage to the backplane communication ICs, or trigger unexpected system shut-downs on running units.

1

Ensure the PLC base unit is completely powered down. Align the lower hook of the module with the installation hole on the base unit.

2

Push the top of the module firmly onto the backplane connector until it locks into place, and secure the top mounting screw to the specified torque limit.

3

Attach the 18-point wired terminal block to the module and hand-tighten the terminal block installation screws.

4

Apply the auxiliary 24 VDC external supply first, verify that the terminal connections are secure and polarity is correct, then power up the main PLC rack.

Are the individual output channels on the Q68DAVN isolated from each other?

No, the output channels are not isolated from one another. However, there is photocoupler isolation between the I/O terminals and the PLC power supply, and transformer isolation between the analog outputs and the external 24 VDC power supply.

What type of crimp terminals can be used on the non-FG terminal block?

You must use R1.25-3 solderless terminals. Sleeved crimp terminals are strictly unsupported on the non-FG terminals as they can prevent the terminal block cover from closing correctly.

How should unused channels on the Q68DAVN be handled?

Unused channels should be disabled in the PLC parameter settings to prevent unnecessary system processing and potential noise generation on ungrounded circuits.
