Product Overview

The EK1100 (EK1100) is the cornerstone of the Beckhoff EtherCAT I/O system, serving as the high-performance link between 100BASE-TX EtherCAT networks and the modular EtherCAT Terminals (ELxxxx series). This coupler is engineered to translate Ethernet-based telegrams into the internal E-bus signal at wire speed, ensuring a near-instantaneous data transfer with a delay of only approximately 1 µs. Supporting up to 65,534 individual terminals and featuring a robust 2000 mA E-bus current supply, the EK1100 is designed for large-scale industrial automation projects. Its German-engineered polycarbonate housing is optimized for DIN rail mounting in harsh environments, providing 500 V electrical isolation and integrated power contacts to simplify the distribution of 24 VDC field potential across the terminal block.

Technical Configuration

The EK1100 architecture focuses on high-speed throughput and simplified field wiring. It features two RJ45 bus interfaces: the upper interface connects the coupler to the network, while the lower interface can be used to extend the EtherCAT segment to further couplers or branch offices. The integrated power supply unit provides 2000 mA to the E-bus, sufficient for powering a high density of I/O terminals. The coupler also includes two sets of power contacts (up to 10 A) that automatically bridge the 24 VDC supply to subsequent terminals through the side-mounted blade contacts. Wiring is facilitated by a vibration-resistant spring-actuation system, supporting cross-sections up to 2.5 mm² (AWG 14), ensuring gas-tight connections in high-vibration machinery.

Technical FAQs

How many EtherCAT terminals can I connect to a single EK1100?

The EtherCAT protocol theoretically supports up to 65,534 nodes. However, in a single terminal block, the practical limit is typically dictated by the total E-bus current consumption. If your terminals exceed the 2000 mA supply provided by the EK1100, you must insert an E-bus power supply terminal (e.g., EL9410).

What is the function of the second RJ45 port on the coupler?

The second port is used for daisy-chaining. It allows the EtherCAT telegram to "continue" to the next station (such as another EK1100 or an EK1122 junction). If no device is connected to the second port, the coupler internally closes the ring to return the telegram to the master.

Does the EK1100 require a specific IP address?

No. EtherCAT devices are addressed based on their physical position in the segment or via an explicit Device ID. The EK1100 does not require an IP address for standard operation, which simplifies commissioning and avoids address conflicts.

Engineering & Installation Guide

E-bus Current Calculation:

Before installation, sum the E-bus current requirements of all ELxxxx terminals planned for the segment. The EK1100 provides a maximum of 2000 mA. If the sum reaches 1800 mA, it is a recommended engineering practice to add an auxiliary power supply terminal to ensure system stability under high-load conditions and to account for potential expansion.

Wiring and Shielding:

Always use shielded Ethernet cables of at least Category 5 (Cat.5) or higher. The RJ45 sockets are internally shielded; ensure the cable shield makes good contact with the connector housing. When wiring the power contacts, use ferrules for stranded wire to ensure the spring-loaded terminals maintain 10 A current capacity without localized heating.

Installation and Grounding:

Mount the EK1100 on a 35 mm DIN rail conforming to EN 60715. The integrated grounding spring on the back of the coupler must make firm contact with the rail. Ensure the DIN rail is connected to the functional earth (FE) of the control cabinet. This is critical for the 500 V electrical isolation to function correctly and for protecting the Ethernet communication from high-frequency interference.
