This unit functions as the head station for EtherCAT Terminal segments (ELxxxx), linking 100BASE-TX Ethernet networks to the ultra-fast E-bus logic. In precision manufacturing, high-speed sorting systems, and compact machine control cabinets, the EK1828-0010 eliminates the need for separate output modules by providing 8 built-in digital outputs. Each channel supports 0.5 A and is short-circuit proof, making it ideal for driving solenoid valves, actuators, and signal indicators. By integrating these outputs directly into the coupler, engineers can significantly reduce the physical footprint of the I/O station while maintaining the nanosecond-level synchronization inherent to the EtherCAT protocol.

Does the integrated output functionality reduce the number of ELxxxx terminals I can attach?

No. The EK1828-0010 can support up to 65,534 EtherCAT devices in a segment. However, you must monitor the E-bus power budget. This coupler provides 1000 mA; if your downstream terminals exceed this current draw, you will need to add an EL9400 power supply terminal.

What is the advantage of having two RJ45 ports on the coupler?

The dual ports allow for "daisy-chaining" (line topology) without the need for additional Ethernet switches. The second port passes the EtherCAT telegram to the next station in the network with a minimal delay of approximately 1 µs.

Are the outputs suitable for driving high-frequency inductive loads?

The integrated outputs are rated for inductive loads with a breaking energy of less than 150 mJ per channel. For larger valves or high-frequency cycling, external flyback diodes are recommended to extend the lifespan of the internal semiconductor switches.

  • Wiring for High Density (HD): The EK1828-0010 uses a compact HD housing. For solid conductors, use the direct plug-in technique for rapid assembly. For fine-stranded wires, use a screwdriver to actuate the spring mechanism. Ensure a stripping length of 8 to 9 mm. Given the high density of connections, properly labeled ferrules are essential to prevent cross-wiring.

  • Power Management (US/UP): The coupler requires two separate 24 VDC feeds. "US" powers the internal electronics and E-bus logic, while "UP" provides the field power for the integrated digital outputs. Separation of these supplies is recommended to prevent field-side load noise from affecting the EtherCAT communication stability.

  • Network Cable Selection: Use a minimum of Cat.5 shielded Ethernet cables. Ensure the shield is properly grounded through the RJ45 connectors to maintain the 100 Mbit/s data rate and prevent telegram loss in high-interference environments.
