Product Overview
The MTL 9465-ET (MTL9465ET) is a rugged 10/100Mbps copper-to-fibre media converter designed for hazardous industrial environments. It extends Ethernet network distances up to 5 km while providing complete galvanic isolation and strong immunity to electrical noise, making it ideal for refineries, chemical plants, and mining operations.
This converter enables reliable data transmission from Zone 1 hazardous areas to safe-area control rooms, reducing signal degradation risks and preventing unexpected system downtime. Its transparent operation ensures full compatibility with existing 10/100Base-T infrastructure, making it a dependable bridge for modern IIoT automation networks.
Technical Configuration
Versatile Optical Interface
The MTL 9465-ET supports 1300 nm optics and multiple fiber connection options. It is available with ST connectors for 62.5/125 µm multimode fiber, as well as SC connectors for both multimode and 9 µm single-mode fiber, allowing flexible deployment across different industrial network designs.
Intrinsically Safe Communication
The copper interface uses a standard RJ45 connector for 10/100Base-T Ethernet. The fiber interface provides inherently safe optical output, enabling fiber routing through Zone 0 hazardous locations without introducing ignition risks.
Flexible Power Options
The module can be powered by an external 12 VDC intrinsically safe supply or by PoEx (Power over IS Ethernet). The PoEx option allows power and data to be transmitted over a single Cat5e cable, simplifying wiring and reducing installation costs.
Network Repeater Capability
For extended distances, multiple converters can be cascaded with an MTL 9466 Ethernet switch. This configuration creates a high-speed repeater system that extends network coverage while also providing additional local connectivity ports.

Technical FAQs
What are the advantages of fiber optics in hazardous networks?
Fiber optics provide excellent immunity to EMI and electrical interference. The inherently safe optical signal also allows long-distance communication without the risk of electrical ignition in explosive environments.
Can the MTL 9465-ET be used in mining applications?
Yes. The module is ATEX and IECEx certified for hazardous areas, and approvals cover both surface industry and mining applications.
How do LED indicators assist troubleshooting?
Front panel LEDs indicate power status, copper and fiber link status, and transmit/receive activity. These indicators help engineers quickly identify link speed, connectivity, and network faults.
Engineering & Installation Guide
PoEx Wiring
When using PoEx, do not connect external power to screw terminals 1-4. Power is delivered through the RJ45 connector on pins 4/5 (positive) and 7/8 (return).
Fibre Port Orientation
For proper duplex communication, the top fiber port is TX and the bottom port is RX when using ST or SC connectors.
Hazardous Area Installation
When installed in Zone 1 or Division 1 areas, the converter must be mounted inside a certified enclosure that meets ingress protection and safety requirements.
Engineering Advantages
The MTL 9465-ET supports wide-temperature operation from −40°C to +70°C and delivers higher reliability than standard commercial media converters. Transparent IEEE 802.3 operation removes the need for software configuration while supporting 10Base-T, 100Base-TX, and 100Base-FX networks.
The ability to extend 10 Mbps links up to 5 km over multimode fiber provides a cost-effective solution for remote telemetry and legacy field device connectivity.
