Product Description

System Integration Capability

The PLX31-EIP-ASCII4 (PLX31EIPASCII4) stands as a high-performance industrial gateway designed to bridge the gap between modern EtherNet/IP networks and legacy serial ASCII devices. In high-demand environments such as automotive assembly lines, automated pharmaceutical packaging, and food processing plants, this gateway facilitates the seamless integration of barcode scanners, weigh scales, and RFID readers directly into the Logix control architecture. By providing four independent serial ports, the PLX31-EIP-ASCII4 eliminates the need for multiple single-port converters, reducing cabinet footprint and simplifying network topology. Its ability to handle high-speed I/O connections with a 5 ms RPI ensures that mission-critical data reaches the PLC without latency, effectively preventing production bottlenecks and minimizing unscheduled downtime.

Protocol Architecture & Communications

The gateway utilizes a dual-stack architecture to ensure maximum compatibility across the Rockwell Automation ecosystem. It supports both Explicit Messaging (Class 3) for asynchronous data exchange and Implicit Messaging (Class 1) for real-time control.

  • Multi-Processor Support: Native integration for ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and legacy platforms including SLC 500 and PLC-5 using PCCC or CIP messaging.

  • EtherNet/IP Performance: Supports up to 4 Class 1 I/O connections with substantial data payload capacities (248 bytes input/output), ensuring complex ASCII strings are transmitted in a single scan.

  • Quad-Port Serial Logic: Each of the four ports operates independently, allowing for mixed baud rates and framing parameters across different serial instruments.

  • Diagnostic Portability: Features an integrated web server for remote diagnostics and a dedicated SD card slot for configuration backup, enabling rapid "disaster recovery" module replacement.

Operations & Maintenance FAQ

Can the PLX31-EIP-ASCII4 communicate with multiple PLCs simultaneously?

Yes. The gateway supports up to 5 Class 3 Server connections, allowing multiple controllers to query the gateway or a single controller to manage different serial ports via distinct messaging paths.

What happens if a serial device is replaced with a different baud rate?

Each of the 4 ports is individually configurable via the ProSoft Configuration Builder (PCB) software. You can update the baud rate (up to 115.2K) for a specific port without affecting the communication stability of the other three ports.

Is this module suitable for outdoor or unconditioned cabinets?

With an extended operating temperature range of -25 to 70 deg C, the module is specifically engineered for harsh industrial environments that experience significant thermal cycling, provided the relative humidity remains non-condensing.

Engineering Installation Guidelines

  • Environmental Durability: The PLX31-EIP-ASCII4 is built for extreme reliability. It carries IEC 60068-2-27 shock ratings (15G operational) and IEC 60068-2-6 vibration ratings (5G), making it ideal for mounting on machinery that experiences high physical stress or near heavy rotating equipment.

  • Power & Grounding: Always utilize the GND terminal provided on the power connector. In environments with high electromagnetic interference (EMI), ensure that the serial cable shields are grounded at a single point to prevent ground loops while protecting the sensitive RS-232/485 signals from noise.

  • RPI Configuration: While the gateway supports a 5 ms Requested Packet Interval (RPI), engineers should balance the RPI setting against the actual baud rate of the serial devices. Setting an RPI significantly faster than the serial transmission speed offers no data benefit and increases unnecessary network overhead.
