Description
The BECKHOFF ER1008-0002 is a rugged, field-level EtherCAT Box designed for direct acquisition of digital signals in demanding industrial environments. As a key component of the IP67-rated EtherCAT I/O system, this distributed module eliminates the need for an electrical control cabinet by allowing sensors to be integrated directly on the machine or production line.
This module features eight digital inputs that process 24 V DC signals with a fixed 3.0 ms input filter. It complies with EN 61131-2 Type 1 and Type 3 sensor input specifications. The inputs are arranged across industrial M12 connection sockets, allowing for secure, watertight sensor connections. Power for the connected sensors is drawn directly from the control voltage, providing up to 0.5 A in total with comprehensive short-circuit protection.
Housed in a heavy-duty, zinc die-cast enclosure, the BECKHOFF ER1008-0002 provides superior mechanical resistance and high environmental protection against dust, moisture, and fluids. The dual-channel design of the M12 sockets allows up to two sensors to be wired to a single physical port, simplifying cable routing and maximizing connection density. Installation Guidelines
- Verify that the physical BECKHOFF ER1008-0002 unit and packaging are undamaged prior to installation.
- Ensure all power sources supply lines are fully de-energized before mounting or cabling.
- Mount the module onto a flat, vibration-resistant surface using two M3 screws through the 3.5 mm fixing holes.
- Connect the EtherCAT incoming and outgoing cables to the M8 fieldbus sockets. Hand-tighten the screw rings to secure the IP67-rated seal.
- Plug the digital sensors into the M12 input sockets. Verify that the A-coded connectors match the socket keyway to prevent pin damage.
- Connect the 24 V DC control voltage to the power feed M8 male connector. Ensure polarities match system requirements.
- If chaining power, connect the downstream M8 female connector to the next module. Install protective caps on any unused sockets to maintain the IP65/66/67 rating.
- Power up the system and configure the node in the TwinCAT System Manager.
Replacement Recommendations
When replacing a failed unit, document the device's physical location, configuration ID, and cable connections before removal. Ensure the system is powered down. Once swapped with an identical BECKHOFF ER1008-0002, the EtherCAT master will typically re-initialize the module automatically using the stored network configuration. Ensure all unused M12 and M8 ports are sealed with appropriate industrial caps to prevent ingress of moisture or dirt.
