Product Overview

The EL9227-9482 (EL 9227-9482) is an advanced 2-channel overcurrent protection terminal designed to safeguard 24 V DC system components within an EtherCAT I/O segment. Featuring extended functionalities, this module provides two independent channels with asymmetrical rated currents of 8 A and 2 A, respectively. In sophisticated automation environments such as pharmaceutical packaging, precision assembly lines, and high-performance motion control, the EL9227-9482 acts as an intelligent electronic fuse. Unlike traditional thermal breakers, it offers programmable trip characteristics, low-voltage warnings, and high-speed electronic switch-off, ensuring that localized faults do not compromise the entire control system's power integrity.

Technical Configuration

The EL9227-9482 architecture is engineered for proactive power management. Channel 1 is rated for 8 A (protected by a 10 A fast fuse element) and is additionally routed via the power contacts, while Channel 2 is rated for 2 A (protected by a 4 A slow fuse element). The terminal includes adjustable advance warning thresholds for both load (50–100%) and low voltage (17–24 V DC), allowing the controller to trigger a safe shutdown before a total power failure occurs. Safety features include reverse polarity protection, overvoltage switch-off at ≥ 32 V DC, and a 3-stage adjustable backward switch-off. The module communicates status and current consumption data directly to the EtherCAT master via the E-bus, utilizing only 80 mA of internal current.

Technical FAQs

What are the "extended functionalities" of the EL9227-9482 compared to standard models?

The extended functionalities include highly granular diagnostic data available over EtherCAT, such as real-time current measurement for each channel, adjustable warning thresholds for voltage and load, and a 3-stage backward switch-off logic to prevent reflected faults in complex power topologies.

Can the trip current be adjusted manually on the module?

The rated currents are fixed at 8 A and 2 A for this specific model, but the advance warning levels and switch-off behaviors are parameterizable via the CoE (CanOverEtherCAT) directory in TwinCAT software. The LED buttons on the front also allow for manual resetting and local status visualization.

What is the purpose of the integrated fail-safe elements?

The fail-safe elements (10 A and 4 A fuses) provide a secondary layer of hardware-based protection in the event of a catastrophic electronic failure within the module, ensuring that the terminal itself does not become a fire hazard or cause a short on the primary 24 V DC bus.

Engineering & Installation Guide

Power Contact Integration (Channel 1):

Note that Channel 1 (8 A) is routed through the terminal's power contacts. This allows for a direct supply to downstream ELxxxx terminals in the same segment. Ensure that the total current load on the power contact rail does not exceed the module's 10 A maximum input current. Use high-quality 24 V DC power supplies with sufficient headroom to handle the combined inrush currents of all connected actuators.

Wiring for High-Current Channels:

For the 8 A output, use a wire cross-section of at least 1.5 mm² to 2.5 mm² (AWG 14–16) to minimize voltage drop and heat generation at the connection point. Stripping length should be strictly 8–9 mm. The spring-loaded terminals are designed to maintain a gas-tight connection under vibration, but for high-current paths, solid conductors or flexible conductors with ferrules are preferred for maximum contact surface area.

Configuring Advance Warnings:

To prevent unplanned downtime, configure the Load Advance Warning at approximately 80% in your TwinCAT project. This provides the PLC with a diagnostic bit indicating that the connected device is nearing its limit (due to mechanical wear or partial short), allowing for predictive maintenance before the EL9227-9482 physically disconnects the circuit. After a switch-off, the module requires a hold time of ≥ 10 seconds to allow for thermal cooling before a reset can be initiated.
