Description

Acquisition of high-density temperature data in space-restricted control cabinets is streamlined using the Beckhoff KS3228 Bus Terminal. This module interfaces directly with Pt1000 and Ni1000 RTD resistance sensors across 8 distinct channels, processing field temperatures with high operational efficiency. Designed with 1-wire connection technology, the hardware optimizes terminal density by utilizing a single signal wire per sensor, referencing a common return path. The integrated pluggable wiring level permits fast, tool-free terminal replacement during commissioning or maintenance cycles, leaving field wiring fully intact and reducing machine downtime.

Features

  • High-Density 8-Channel Layout: Monitors up to 8 independent RTD sensors within a single, ultra-slim 12 mm housing.
  • Pluggable Connection Interface: Features a removable wiring tier for rapid hardware hot-swaps without disconnecting active field cables.
  • Flexible Sensor Interoperability: Built-in hardware scaling and linearization for both Pt1000 and Ni1000 RTD sensors.
  • Open-Circuit Detection: Automatically flags broken wires and sensor faults in the process image to prevent control loop errors.
  • K-Bus Communication: Powered directly via the K-bus backplane, minimizing external auxiliary power requirements.

Applications

  • Multi-zone thermal control in plastics processing, extrusion, and injection molding machinery.
  • Air handling units, building automation systems, and HVAC environmental monitoring.
  • Server rack and control cabinet internal temperature safety monitoring systems.
  • Low-temperature refrigeration control loops and industrial chiller monitoring.

Alternative Models & Compatibility

The KS3228 is the direct pluggable equivalent of the standard KL3228 Bus Terminal. While the KL3228 utilizes permanent tension-clamp connections, the KS3228 features a detachable wiring block. They share identical register mappings, K-bus footprints, and electrical parameters, enabling a direct functional swap in existing K-bus configurations without software or PLC modifications.

Application Pitfalls & Engineering Notes

Because this module utilizes a 1-wire connection scheme, it does not compensate for the resistance of the lead wires. Designers must keep lead wire runs as short as possible to prevent offset errors; every extra ohm of cable resistance will register as an apparent increase in temperature. When using long cable distances, software offsets must be calibrated inside the controller register configuration to offset systemic wire resistance. If high precision is required over long physical distances, consider switching to 2-wire or 4-wire RTD modules such as the KL3208 series.

Commissioning & Wiring Tips

To ensure stable RTD measurement signals, route sensor lines in shielded cables separated from high-voltage, high-frequency motor cables and AC power distributions. Connect the cable shield to a low-impedance ground bus bar immediately at the enclosure entrance point. When configuring the module, use the KS2000 configuration software or register-based PLC commands to choose between Pt1000 and Ni1000 scaling algorithms and to toggle active process data filter settings.

Installation Guidelines

CRITICAL WARNING: De-energize all field power supplies and K-bus systems before inserting, removing, or wiring any Bus Terminal. Failure to isolate power can damage internal K-bus contact fingers and lead to unpredictable field station behavior or hardware failure.
1

Mount the existing K-bus bus coupler or terminal block securely to a grounded 35 mm DIN rail (conforming to EN 60715).

2

Slide the KS3228 terminal onto the rail next to the existing unit, aligning the double slot-and-key locking mechanism until it clicks into place.

3

For wiring, insert a standard screwdriver into the spring actuation slot on the pluggable level, feed the stripped wire (9 to 10 mm stripping length) into the connection point, and release the tension clamp.

What is the key difference between the Beckhoff KS3228 and the KL3228?

The KS3228 features a pluggable wiring level, allowing the terminal body to be swapped without removing the field wiring. The KL3228 uses fixed, non-removable tension clamp connections. They are otherwise identical in registers and functionality.

Does the KS3228 compensate for wire resistance in long RTD runs?

No. The KS3228 uses a 1-wire connection scheme and does not actively compensate for cable resistance. For long runs, offset calibration must be configured in software to maintain accuracy.

Which RTD sensor types are compatible with the KS3228?

The KS3228 supports Pt1000 and Ni1000 temperature sensors, with a default resolution of 0.1 degC per digit.

How is the sensor selection configured on this module?

Sensor scaling and range select are programmed via register configuration through the K-bus coupler or using the KS2000 configuration software tool.
