Description

Allen-Bradley 1756-IF8 is a non-isolated analog input module designed for high-density signal acquisition within the ControlLogix control system architecture. This module provides a direct interface between the programmable automation controller and field sensing instruments, accepting both voltage and current analog signals across its inputs. Configurable for single-ended, differential, or high-speed differential operation modes, the 1756-IF8 delivers precise signal processing and conversion to support stable control loops in diversified industrial processes.

Operating on a Sigma-Delta conversion principle, the module processes signal inputs with a resolution up to 16 bits, enabling highly accurate digital representation of real-world process variables. Built with channel-level diagnostics, the 1756-IF8 actively detects overrange, underrange, and wire-off fault conditions to maintain system up-time and process protection. It utilizes producer-consumer technology to distribute captured data efficiently across multiple controllers over local or remote backplanes.

Features

  • Multi-Mode Configuration: Supports up to 8 single-ended, 4 differential, or 2 high-speed differential input configurations on a single module.
  • Flexible Input Signal Range: Accommodates bipolar voltage options of +/-10V, 0 to 10V, 0 to 5V, as well as current loops ranging from 0 to 20 mA and 4 to 20 mA.
  • High-Resolution Conversion: Features 15-bit plus sign resolution for bipolar voltage mode and a full 16-bit resolution for unipolar voltage and current inputs.
  • Integrated Process Alarms: Offers programmable process alarms, rate alarms, and diagnostic error reporting directly to the backplane.
  • Hot-Swappable Chassis Design: Supports Removal and Insertion Under Power (RIUP), allowing field modules to be replaced without disconnecting chassis backplane power.

Applications

  • Real-time monitoring of process transmitters in oil, gas, and chemical manufacturing.
  • High-speed data logging for pressure, flow, and level sensors in water treatment plants.
  • Temperature transducer and sensor integration via external signal conditioners.
  • General factory automation systems requiring centralized high-density analog sensing.

Installation Guidelines

  • Chassis Alignment: Push the module firmly into the slot guides of the local or remote chassis until the top and bottom latches click into place. Installation or removal can be performed while backplane power is applied.
  • Removable Terminal Block Wiring: Connect unshielded or shielded signal wires to the 36-pin RTB (1756-TBCH or 1756-TBS6H) before attaching the block to the front of the module.
  • Shielding and Grounding: Strip a short segment of cable jacket, twist the foil shield and bare drain wire together, and attach the drain line to a proper panel earth ground to reduce external electromagnetic interference.
  • Current Loop Resistors: Ensure current loops are correctly routed through the specified i RTN terminal to pass current through the internal 249 Ohm precision resistor.
